Lost in Translation

I subscribe to an online discussion forum for housing workers in my area. I often skim the discussion notices I get in my in-box, however the following caught my attention:


User 1: Hello, we are searching for a Ga-speaking mental health outreach worker for one of our Ghanaian tenants who is struggling with schizophrenia. We've contacted a number of MH service agencies and settlement service agencies, but have had no luck. Any contacts would be much appreciated.

User 2: you can try Multilingual Community Interrupter Service who would be able to support you!!!

User 3: I believe the spelling is Interpreter. An interrupter service would be the polar opposite of that provided by MCIS.

Circle of Care

Earlier this week I joined a client during a CAS (Children's Aid Services) intake interview. It took over two hours. I was the one who had called CAS in. She was aware that I was going to do so, and was more or less okay with it. She's had involvement from them before, and wants to get the help that she and her kids need.

As much as she's on board with using services and accessing supports, I still can't help but sigh when she starts signing consent forms and there are 7, 8, 9 or more of them.

There is a fine line between helping, and invading somebody's life. I fear that line fell closer to helpers number 3 or 4. Maybe 5, but definitely somewhere way before 10.

National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women

December 6. I couldn’t let the whole day go by without remembering that it has been 21 years since the Montreal Massacre at Ecole Polytechnique. Vigils will be held across Canada today to remember the woman who were killed or injured, and to recognize the National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women.




Throughout this year the ongoing debate about the long gun registry has reached a fever pitch. The registry was put in place after the events of December 6, 1989 in hopes of preventing future tragedies. I hope this story doesn’t trump important discussions of femicide and violence around this time.



It seems more encouraging to highlight things like the December 6 fund, an initiative of the YWCA offering interest free loans to women leaving violent and abusive homes. We know that finances are one of the major reasons that women may not leave an abusive relationship. Initiatives like this that offer women the opportunity to use their own ideas and skills to create a new life are invaluable. I’ve known a couple women who have benefited from this fund, and they continue to be grateful.



So here’s to an end to all gender-based violence, and a rose to remember the women who have suffered it.

Gotta love Can’t even despise my loathing for these agency “planning” events. Had one last Friday.

I hate nametags. And ice breakers. And “small groups”. And brain storming. Not to mention, the only “vegetarian” offering at lunch was egg salad on white bread. Very appetizing. At least I’m not vegan, or I’d starve at these things.
